San Francisco 49ers 2006 NFC West Preview

Mike Nolan is in his second year as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.  Nolan does not have too much to look forward to going into 2006 even though the 49ers ended the season on a bit of a winning streak to avoid having the worse record in 2005.

Second year quarterback Alex Smith is hoping to get off to a good start to his 2006 season.  Smith had a terrible rookie year that included passing for only 875 yards and 1 touchdown along with 11 interceptions and 11 fumbles.  In his defense, most rookie quarterbacks get to warm the bench until they learn the system.  Smith should improve his 2005 numbers but that in saying much.  Frank Gore will start at running back for the 49ers.  Gore ran for 608 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2005.  Gore showed sparks of brilliance last season and the 49ers hope he can regain his college form this season.  San Francisco selected Maryland tight end Vernon Davis in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft.  Davis was a stud at Maryland and could even become the leading receiver for the 49ers in 2006.  Antonio Bryant and Arnaz Battle will start at wide receiver.  Neither will have stellar numbers as the offense continues to struggle under Smith.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2006 ACC PreviewWake Forest Demon Deacons O:9 D:10

Since they won the Seattle Bowl back in 2002 not much has gone right for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, but head coach Jim Grobe feels very good about his team's chances of making the post-season in 2006. He now has full control over the roster and the team is filled with his recruits, with a deep and talented roster.

How they fare against their non-conference opponents will tell the tale of how Wake Forest does this year. They could sweep the board if they bring their best effort to every game, and would enter ACC play very confident if that was to happen. They will at the very least play a vicious spoiler to the elite of the ACC, and play in a bowl game for the second time in the Grobe era.

North Carolina State Wolfpack 2006 ACC PreviewNorth Carolina State Wolfpack O:5 D:5

Last season the North Carolina State Wolfpack entered the season with a lot of optimism with a large group of returnees and a rock solid defense. The season opener against the Virginia Tech Hokies was chilling sign of things to come. Though they doubled the Hokies in yards gained they lost the game 20-16, and shot themselves in the foot with costly turnovers and penalties. These trends continued for the next six games, but they did turn it around when they won five of their last six to make it to a bowl game.

The NFL draft has taken a lot of this team's talent on "D", with only five guys coming back. But, head coach Chuck Amato believes in depth and has 15 players return with at least one start under their belt. The front seven might have lost a step but the secondary is a strong unit with lots of speed. Though not as good as years past this will still be a good strong unit.
