To no one's surprise, the defending champion New York Yankees are the favorite to win the Fall Classic at +300 moneyline odds. Following the Bronx Bombers are the list of usual suspects, including the Phillies (+550), Red Sox (+650), Cardinals (+1200), Dodgers (+1200), and Angels (+1200).
The Yankees ended an eight year championship drought last season, winning the franchise's 27th World Series title by
beating the Phillies four games to two. New York compiled a league best 103-59 record during the regular season and the team led the majors in almost every offensive category, including runs (915), hits (1604), RBI (881), and on-base percentage (.362).
New York's roster experienced little turnover, aside from the additions of Curtis Granderson, Javier Vazquez, and Nick Johnson and the losses of Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui. The batting lineup features a murder's row in the heart of the order with Johnson, Mark Texixeira, and Alex Rodriguez while the pitching staff will be anchored by C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte and the newly acquired Vazquez. Future Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera also returns to his role as closer.
The Phillies, which won the 2008 World Series (the franchise's first crown since 1980), are the favorite to challenge to the Yanks and rightfully so considering their talent laden roster. On offense the Phils still have stalwarts Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Raul Ibanez and the pitching staff, if Cole Hamels can return to form, may be the best in baseball. Cliff Lee is gone but Roy Halladay takes his spot as the staff ace, joining the aforementioned Hamels, Joe Blanton, J.A. Happ, and the everlasting Jamie Moyer.
