Odds to win World Series 2010

by Matt Foust on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Odds to win World Series 2010: The 2010 baseball season is staring seamheads right in the face, and while hope springs eternal at this time of year, it would seem only a few teams actually have a chance to win the World Series. Online bookmaker Sportsbook.com has designated their most likely candidates to do just that, with the charge being led by defending champion Yankees at +275 moneyline odds. Following New York are the Phillies (+600), Red Sox (+800), Cardinals (+1100), Angels (+1500), and Rays (+1500).

A quick look at Sportsbook.com's World Series 2010 odds reveals that their top five most favored teams to win the Fall Odds to win World Series 2010Classic contains the last four World Series winners as well as the 2002 league champion (Angels). Considering that baseball postseasons tend to mirror each other, as far as participants are concerned, in two or three year cycles, it is probably safe to say that the winner will emerge from that front running group.

New York, for example, has been involved in the postseason in 14 of the last 15 years, including five World Series titles. The Phillies have been to the past two Fall Classics, winning the 2008 crown, and they have made the playoffs three straight years. The Cardinals won the 2006 World Series and have been to the playoffs seven times in the last 10 years. The Red Sox have been to the playoffs six of the last seven years and they have two world championships in that span (2004, 2007) as well.

Recent history does indicate that one or two teams will reach the postseason that do not belong in that upper echelon group (i.e. Brewers 2008, Diamondbacks 2007, Mets & Padres 2006). However, it would appear that the most likely entrants from that second tier cluster this year are teams that have reached the playoffs at least a couple of times over the past few seasons. The Angels, Dodgers, Rockies, Rays, and Cubs, all of which are in the the top 10 of Sportsbook.com's odds list, have appeared in the playoffs 11 times over the past four years.
