Albert Pujols garnered his third NL MVP award last season, tying him with Cardinal great Stan Musial. Pujols posted a .327
batting average and he led the league in home runs with 47. The 30 year old Dominican native also ranked third in the league in RBI (135), second in on-base percentage (.443), first in slugging percentage (.658), and 14th in hits (186).
Pujols, who also won the MVP award in 2005 and 2008, has given no indication that a drop-off in his production is in order. He has had some back issues during Spring Training, but Pujols has missed an average of just seven games per season in his nine year career.
Twins catcher Joe Mauer secured his first MVP trophy last year after posting a .365 batting average to go along with 28 home runs and 96 RBI. The 26 year old Mauer, who led the league in on-base percentage at .444, got paid handsomely this off-season for his on-field production as Minnesota inked the All-Star to an eight year, $184 million contract extention. However, do not expect Mauer to rest on his laurels, it is not his make-up.
Evan Longoria hit for .281 last year and he knocked 33 homers with 113 RBI. He also put together a .364 on-base percentage and .526 slugging mark. All of his numbers, across the board, jumped up last year from his 2008 Rookie of the Year campaign. If he can do the same this year he will certainly be in Mauer's company.
