Baltimore Orioles 2010 Baseball Predictions: It has been a long time since the Baltimore Orioles finished higher than fourth place in the American League East, 2004 to be exact (third place). Given the high level of competition in the East, the O's prospects do not look much better in 2010. Baseball oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com see it that way anyway as Baltimore is listed at +2000 moneyline odds to win the division in the online bookmaker's 2010 Baseball Predictions.
Offensively the Orioles should be able to compete, in spite of the 4.57 runs per game that the team produced in last year's
64-98 campaign. There are a number of good hitters on Baltimore's roster, including Brian Roberts, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, and Luke Scott.
Add to those big sticks second year catcher Matt Weiters, who posted some solid numbers in the later half of his rookie season, and new addition Garret Atkins, who hit 46 homers and 211 RBI for the Rockies in 2007 and 2008. The sub-par offensive numbers (below the AL average in runs per game, RBI, and OPS) should improve drastically if everyone can stay healthy.
The pitching staff has been the Achilles' heel for the Orioles for quite some time. Last year the team ranked last in the majors with a 5.15 ERA and .288 batting average against.
Things should be better this year with addition of veteran righty Kevin Millwood to the starting rotation and Mike Gonzalez to the bullpen; however, those two alone will not completely turn things around. It could be another long year for a group that continually has to challenge the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays.
2010 Baseball Predictions: 5th Place AL East. Not enough offense to counter what is a suspect pitching staff.
