2010 World Series Picks: The 2010 Major League Baseball season gets under way this Sunday, and fittingly, the two favorites to win the Fall Classic in SPORTSBETTING.com's 2010 World Series Picks, New York and Boston, will square off at Fenway Park. The Yankees are currently listed at 3 to 1 odds to repeat last year's accomplishment while the Red Sox are registering at 4 to 1 odds. The two favorites in the National League are the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, listed at 5 to 1 and 7 to 1 odds respectively.
New York: The Yankees carried the success from their 103-59 regular season into the 2009 playoffs, going 11-4 against the
Twins, Angels, and Phillies to win the franchise's 27 World Series title. A couple of players from that team are gone, including World Series MVP Hideki Matsui, but New York should be as good or better than it was last season. The pitching staff added a great arm in Javier Vazquez and the losses of Matsui and Johnny Damon were softened by the signings of Curtis Granderson and Nick Johnson.
Boston: The Red Sox finished second to the Yanks in the AL East last year, but they still put together a 95-67 season. However, the postseason did not go according to plan for Boston as it was ousted in the Division Series 3-0 by the Angels. Sensing the need to upgrade, Red Sox officials brought in starting pitcher John Lackey, third baseman Adrian Beltre, outfielder Mike Cameron, and shortstop Marco Scutaro. If they can get past New York, this roster definitely has World Series potential.
St. Louis: The Cardinals won the NL Central last year with a 91-71 record, but things quickly fell apart for Tony LaRussa's squad in the playoffs. The Dodgers, surprisingly, swept St. Louis 3-0 in the Division Series, ending what many St. Louis fans thought would be another run to the World Series. The team lost quite a few players in the off-season, including Mark DeRosa, Troy Glaus, Rick Ankiel, Todd Wellemeyer, and Joel Pineiro. However, the Cardinals did sign Brad Penny and they inked Matt Holliday to a long-term deal. Also, it appears that former Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter is fully recovered for the injuries issues that have plagued him the past two years.
Philadelphia: The Phillies won their third consecutive division crown last season and made their second consecutive appearance in the Fall Classic. Philly failed in its bid to win back-to-back World Series titles, falling 2-4 to the Yankees. The team made a couple of big off-season moves that should put them back in the postseason with the ability to do some damage once there. The Phillies traded for Toronto ace Roy Halladay and they added third baseman Placido Polanco to already potent batting order. Philadelphia probably does not have the best rotation in the NL East top to bottom, but it is a good one and its offense should be able to make up for any pitching deficiencies.
