Boston has finished second to the Rays and Yankees in the AL East race over the past two seasons, which cannot be sitting 
well in Bean Town. Well, Red Sox brass does not like the trend either and their off-season moves made that quite evident. The team was above average in almost every major offensive category, including batting average, runs per game, RBI, and OPS, but the front office still moved to acquire more talent.
Adrian Beltre, Mike Cameron, Marco Scutaro, and Jeremy Hermida were all inked to deals, reinforcing a batting order that already featured Victor Martinez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, and David Ortiz. If that lineup does not produce at least five runs per game than something has gone seriously awry in the baseball universe.
The Red Sox pitching staff had some ups and downs last year with Jon Lester's slow start and Daisuke Matsuzaka's injury issues, but the starting rotation, on paper, looks like one of the best in baseball. The addition of John Lackey, the longtime Angels ace, only makes the one through five more formidable.
The Boston bullpen was tremendous last year (3.80 ERA) and figures to be much the same this season with Jonathan Papelbon, Ramon Ramirez, and Hideki Okajima still in the fold.
2010 Baseball Predictions: 2nd Place AL East. Great lineup and outstanding pitching staff, but not quite the equal of New York.
