New York won 103 games last year thanks to a really good pitching staff and an incredible offense that generated 5.65 runs
per game. A few key players are gone from the batting order in Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui, but they have been replaced by Curtis Granderson and Nick Johnson. The changes are probably an upgrade in production but they are without question an upgrade in the age department as Damon and Matsui are in the twilight of their careers.
All the big boppers are back, namely Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira, which means the team's run production is not going anywhere. Teams facing the Yankees had better be able to rake or at least throw a top level pitcher for an entire series because like Michael Jordan was going to get his points, New York is going to get its runs.
The Yankees starting rotation, which ranked 13th in the league last year with a 4.48 ERA, was also bolstered in the off-season by a trade for Javier Vazquez. Having Vazquez in the three or four spot is devastating for New York's opposition. Not many four starters can produce a 2.87 ERA and strikeout 238 batters as Vazquez did last year for the Braves. C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte, Javier Vazquez…looks like a lot of wins does it not?
The relief staff lost a couple of good contributors in Phil Coke and Brian Bruney, but Joba Chamberlain's return to the pen makes up for at least one if not both of those losses. And Mariano Rivera, the best closer to ever live, is still slamming the door as well as anybody, even at 40 years old.
2010 Baseball Predictions: 1st Place AL East. Boston will challenge, but too much power in the Yanks lineup and, with Vazquez, the rotations are pretty much a wash.
