Chicago Cubs Odds to Win 2010 World Series: It's only been five and a half months since the 2009 Major League Baseball season ended with the New York Yankees celebrating another World Championship. Now the 2010 season is about to see its first pitch. With the season opener on Easter Sunday (April 4) and the full schedule opening Monday, we (Point-Spreads.com) are looking at each team and their odds of winning a division, pennnant or World Series. Today the Chicago Cubs take center stage.
Last year the Cubs finished in second place in the National League Central Division 7.5 games behind the division winning St. Louis Cardinals. For a team that suffered far to many injuries to be expected to win (especially in their pitching rotation), they did an adequate job of pulling out a winning season with an 83-78 record. If any one area can be blamed for not winning the Central Division, it is without a doubt, the pitching. The Cubs will not win when their ace Carlos Zambrano only gets nine wins on the season. The most wins from any of its pitchers was 12, equaled by Ted Lilly and Rich Harden. Ryan Dempster notched 11 victories. While at times the pitching in '09 was steller, it was way inconsistant to merit a championship run. Harden has since left the team signing a free-agent deal with American League's Texas Rangers.
Of Chicago's position players, not much has changed except for the departure of discontented Milton Bradley, traded to the Mariners for pitcher Carlos Silva. Following Bradley's exit, the Cubs signed free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd.
The Cubs opening day lineup should have Derrek Lee at first, Aramis Ramires, third, Ryan Theriot at short, and Geovany Soto doing the catching. Kosuke Fukudome will be the right fielder with Byrd in Center Field and Alfonso Soriano in Left Field.
