Cincinnati Reds 2010 Baseball Predictions: The Cincinnati Reds have not finished higher than third place in the six team National League Central since going 85-77 in 2000. The team made a move in the right direction last year, going 78-84, but it still finished a distant fourth in the standings. Baseball oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the Reds listed at +700 moneyline odds to win the division in their 2010 Baseball Predictions.
Cincinnati's offense did not exactly scare teams away last year, averaging just 4.15 runs per game. Given the talent on the
roster, the lack of offensive production did not make a lot of sense. The team has both pop and speed in the batting order with guys like Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto, Scott Rolen, and Jay Bruce. The Reds did have to deal with injury issues in 2009 as Votto and Bruce missed almost three months, which no doubt affected the team's output.
With everyone healthy coming into the 2010 season, and shortstop Orlando Cabrera joining the team, Cincinnati figures to bang out considerably more runs than it did a season ago. Especially if Votto continues to swing the bat the way he has during Spring Training. The Toronto native has hit three home runs, 13 RBI, and five doubles in 21 exhibition games.
The Reds starting rotation took a big hit when Edinson Volquez went down with elbow issues in June. If Volquez returns this season it probably will not be until August or September (recovering from Tommy John surgery). Still, the team has some good arms in veterans Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo as well as up and comer Johnny Cueto. If Cueto becomes the player that everyone expects, he could give Cincy a huge boost.
Cincinnati's bullpen put together a stellar 3.56 ERA and it should be one of the better units in the Central again this season with the likes of Francisco Cordero, Nick Masset, and Danny Herrera all back in the fold.
