The Detroit Tigers will attempt to even their record at 2-2 today as they open up a three game set against the undefeated Orioles at Camden Yards. First pitch in this afternoon's game is scheduled for 3:05pm ET at Oriole Park. MLB Odds and Predictions have Baltimore listed as a -130 moneyline favorite and the game total set at 10. The Over is presently favored at -115 moneyline odds.
Detroit got its season started on a sour note, losing the first two games in its opening series against the Yankees. The Tigers avoided the sweep, though, after hitting their way to a 10-7 win in yesterday's series finale. Miguel Cabrera and Brennan Boesch starred in the victory as they each drove in four runs. Cabrera finished the day 3-for-5 with two home runs while Boesch went 4-for-4 with four runs and one home run.
Detroit, which has lost five of its last seven against Baltimore, will look to build on yesterday's win but it will need a solid pitching performance from Rick Porcello in order to do so. Porcello is coming off a 10-12 season where he posted a 4.43 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. The 22 year old right hander closed out his 2010 campaign with a 2-1 loss at Oriole Park; he gave up 12 hits, two earned runs, and struck out four (6.1 innings) in the setback.
Baltimore enters today's game fresh off a road sweep of division rival Tampa Bay. The Orioles scored a total of 12 runs in the series while its pitching staff allowed just three. Rookie left hander Zach Britton capped off the terrific series yesterday by giving up just three hits and one earned run in his major league debut.
Twenty-five year old Jake Arrieta will be charged with keeping the momentum rolling as he takes the hill for the Orioles home opener. Arrieta posted a 4.66 ERA in 18 starts last season, his first in the big leagues, but he showed plenty of promise, particularly in his final three starts. The Farmington, Missouri native went 2-1 in the month of September after giving up just five earned runs and two walks (13 strike outs) in 17.1 innings pitched.
Arrieta is making his second career appearance against the Tigers today. He gave up seven hits and one earned run in his first meeting with Detroit (July 6th), but Baltimore lost the game 5-7 thanks to a bullpen implosion.
