Justin Verlander is coming off a great 19-9 season that saw him accumulate a paltry 3.45 ERA and a league leading 269 strikeouts. Verlander is 9-2 in 14 career starts versus Kansas City with a 2.32 ERA, including a 2-1 mark last season.
Kansas City finished their exhibition slate with a 14-13 mark, which was good enough for seventh place in the 15 team Cactus League. The Royals were not as fortunate last season, though, placing fifth in the AL Central with a 65-97 record. There is, however, a certain measure of hope in the heartland this year as the Royals signed outfielders Rick Ankiel and Scott Podsednick and they get shortstop Mike Aviles back from Tommy John surgery.
Greinke was brilliant last year, posting a 2.16 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in his first ever Cy Young campaign. Greinke, as mentioned, was a Tiger killer last season, but he has consistently befuddled Detroit throughout his career. The 26 year old is 11-5 in 19 career starts with a 2.50 ERA against the Tigers.
