The start of the baseball season is already in the books, and Sportsbook.com has their 2009 National League Pennant Odds up for baseball bettors to get an early jump on their favorite to win the NCLS. The online bookmaker has the NL Central's Chicago Cubs listed as the favorite to win the National League this year at +250 moneyline odds. The Chicago Cubs are well known for their longstanding World Series drought, but the results of the past two seasons has many viewing them as choke artists. The Cubs have compiled a 182-141 record over the past two years but have gone 0-6 in the post-season. They are no longer the lovable losers, instead becoming the winners who have a penchant for playoff losing. Still, the talent is there for the Cubbies as their record would indicate, and there is no reason they should not grab the NL Central crown again this season. Close behind Chicago is another gag master, the New York Mets. The Blue and Orange have gone 274-212 over the past three seasons but have made the playoffs just once in that span. Their 2007 collapse will forever live in infamy as they blew a huge NL East lead down the stretch due to their inability to win at Shea. Last season was another tease, the Mets racking up an 89-73 record to finish three games behind the Phillies in the division and a game back of the Brewers for the Wildcard spot. The Mets have all the tools to compete with the Phillies, but can they overcome the mental block that they have put up over the course of the last two seasons? Last year's NCLS victor and World Series Champion, the Philadelphia Phillies, are being listed at +500 moneyline odds to repeat as the NL Pennant winner. The Phillies have been the anti-Mets the past two years, coming on strong late to push their way into the post-season. In 2007 they were embarassed by the redhot Rockies, but last year they displayed a gritty determination in winning their first world championship since 1980. They lost outfielder Pat Burrell in the offseason as well as starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick, but they added a highly productive bat in left fielder Raul Ibanez. The rest of their championship roster is largely intact. Sportsbook.com's 2009 National League Pennant Odds: Chicago Cubs +250 New York Mets +350 Philadelphia Phillies +500 Los Angeles Dodgers +600 Arizona Diamondbacks +700 Atlanta Braves +1000 St. Louis Cardinals +1000 San Francisco Giants +1200 Cincinnati Reds +1800 Florida Marlins +1800 Houston Astros +3500 Colorado Rockies +3500 Washington Nationals +4500 Pittsburgh Pirates +5000 |
