Baltimore's quick start has officially faded with the club losing its third straight game last night. The Orioles fell to the
Yankees 4-7 in game one of their would be three game set (game one postponed) as New York pounded Chris Tillman for nine hits and six earned runs in the first two innings of play.
Baltimore's offense failed to provide answer until the top of the seventh when it finally got to Yanks hurler A.J. Burnett with two home runs and four RBI. The Orioles season long hold on first place in the AL East fell as a result with New York, which is also 6-4, wresting control of the division lead based upon head-to-head record.
New York is seeking just its second back to back wins of the season tonight as it has not strung together two consecutive victories since topping the Tigers 6-3 and 10-6 to open the year. Phil Hughes, who has presided over two horrific starts thus far, will attempt to fix his early season woes and kick start a Yankees win streak when he takes the hill tonight.
Hughes, who has given up 11 earned runs in six innings of work this year, is 4-2 with a 5.04 ERA in 11 career appearances against the Orioles.
Baltimore will look to second year hurler Jake Arrieta to help halt its current skid at three games. Arrieta, who has compiled a 3.65 ERA in 12.1 innings against New York, pitched exceptionally in his first outing of the season, giving up six hits and one earned run in a 5-1 win over the Tigers. He fell apart in his second start, though, yielding six hits and eight earned runs over 3.1 innings in a 1-13 loss to Texas.
