Chicago lost its sixth straight game last night, falling 2-1 to the Rays to bring its record to 7-10 on the season. The White
Sox, which rank eighth in the league in runs scored (81), managed just four hits and one earned run against Tampa Bay's James Shields in the setback. Shields, who turned in the sixth complete game performance of his career, also struck out nine.
Chicago, with road trips to Detroit and New York looming on the horizon, desperately needs to find a way to end its skid tonight. That will require getting to the Rays' Wade Davis, who has compiled a 1-2 record and 3.26 ERA through three starts.
The White Sox, which have scored a grand total of 12 runs during their six game losing streak, have not fared well against Davis in the past. The Florida native is 2-1 in three appearances against Chicago with a 2.45 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.
The Rays (8-9, second AL East), winners in seven of their last eight games, will face the Sox Philip Humber tonight. Humber, a 28 year old right hander out of Nacogdoches, Texas, will be making his third start and fifth appearance of the season.
Humber (1-1, 3.46 ERA) went five innings his last time out after surrendering six hits and two earned runs in a 3-4 loss to the Angels. Prior to that showing, Humber gave up four hits and one earned run (six innings) in a 4-2 Sox win over the Rays.
Tampa Bay can even the season series between these two squads with a win tonight; Chicago took three out of four from the Rays at U.S. Cellular Field earlier this month.
