This was Hughes' third start in a row on the road, and the young pitcher seems to be showing nervous when not in front of his home fans. This is a big change from last season, when Hughes went 4-1 in six road starts while holding the opposition to an average of .148.
The White Sox will give the ball to Gavin Floyd (2-0, 1.40), and the 25-year-old righthander has raced out of the gate after an underwhelming debut season in Chicago. Floyd scattered a pair of runs on two hits in six innings of a 6-5 loss at Baltimore, earning a no-decision for his efforts. This was one start after a masterful one-hit performance over Detroit, and the fifth-year pitcher appears to be ready to make the next step in his big-league progress. Floyd did not fare so well in his only start against the Yankees last season, getting pelted for five runs on six hits (including three home runs) in only three innings of a 16-3 loss.
The Yankees took the first game of this series, but in Hughes, they have a young pitcher who is lacking in confidence. Hughes came to the Yankees with much fanfare, and he has all the talent in the world to be a star. But all of these road starts are starting to wear on him, so the offense is going to have to give him some run support, especially early in the game.
