American League East rivals Boston and Baltimore continue their three game set this evening as the Red Sox look to even the series at a game apiece. The Orioles, which took last night's opener 4-1, will send veteran Jeremy Guthrie to the hill. Boston will counter the Stanford graduate with Josh Beckett. Tonight's game is scheduled to get underway at 7:05pm ET at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The latest MLB Odds have the Red Sox listed as a -150 moneyline favorite; the game total is set at eight with the Over drawing -120 odds.
Boston saw its five game win streak come to an end last night after Baltimore rookie Zach Britton held the team to five hits and one earned run over six innings. The Red Sox Clay Buchholz, who once hurled a no-hitter against the Orioles, got battered for 12 hits and four earned runs in the 4-1 loss.
Veteran Josh Beckett will attempt to outperform his fellow starter this evening as he looks to increase the gap between Boston and the AL East cellar. The Red Sox, at 10-12, currently hold a half game lead over the fifth place Orioles. Neither squad is too far out of the race, though, with Baltimore just 3.5 games back of the first place Yankees.
Beckett, who is 6-3 lifetime against the Orioles with a 3.53 ERA, has been dominant through four starts this season. The Spring, Texas native is 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA and 0.79 WHIP, but his numbers are even more impressive if one removes the totals from his first outing of the year. Beckett has allowed a meager eight hits, three earned runs, and five walks (24 strikeouts) over 23 innings since losing 3-1 at Cleveland on April 5th.
Jeremy Guthrie has also pitched well this season, with his only bad start coming against the Indians as well. Guthrie gave up 10 hits and six earned runs over five innings in a 3-8 loss at Cleveland on April 16th. Outside of that performance the 32 year old right hander has given up 14 hits, three earned runs, and two walks in 21 innings.
Guthrie's best work from the mound has seldom been featured opposite the Red Sox. In 15 career appearances against Boston, Guthrie has produced a 1-7 record to go along with a 4.94 ERA and 1.63 WHIP.
These two rivals spilt the season series last year with both teams garnering nine wins. Last night's loss represented Boston's sixth in its last 10 games at Camden Yards, though.
