The reeling Tigers roll into the Big Apple tonight to begin a three game set with the Yankees. Detroit, a loser of four straight, will send reigning Cy Young winner Justin Verlander to the hill while New York attempts to halt its two game slide with right-hander Ivan Nova toeing the rubber. This evening’s series opener, which will be broadcast live on the MLB Network, is scheduled for a 7:05pm ET start. MLB Point Spreads have the Tigers listed as a -121 moneyline favorite and the Over/Under set at 8.5 runs.
Detroit got off to a wonderful 9-3 start, but the wheels came off the Tigers machine when they kicked off a seven game home stand against Texas. The Rangers took three out of four from Jim Leyland’s squad before the Mariners pulled off an improbable three game sweep at Comerica Park.
The Tigers high-powered offense disappeared against Seattle and Texas, posting a total of 22 runs in seven games (3.2 runs per game). The pitching staff also fell apart, yielding an average of 6.5 runs per game during the two series.
Justin Verlander, who presided over the team’s only win during the home stand, will attempt to correct at least one of those issues when he steps on the mound tonight. Verlander, as expected, has been outstanding thus far, bringing a 1.72 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 31 strikeouts into tonight’s start (four starts, 31.1 innings). The seven year veteran owns a 4-3 record, 3.97 ERA, and 1.50 WHIP in 10 career starts against the Yankees.
New York saw its record fall to 10-8 on Wednesday night when the Rangers knocked off the Yankees 7-3 to complete a 2-1 series win in Arlington. The Yankees are now 1.5 games behind the AL East leading Rays and Orioles.
New York, which has played 11 of its 18 games on the road, will open a six game home stand with Ivan Nova on the hill. Nova, who is making his fourth start of the season, enters tonight’s game with a 3-0 record and 3.79 ERA. The Dominican native has given up 25 hits over 19 innings pitched, but he has allowed just eight earned runs and relinquished two walks to 20 strikeouts.
Detroit has won three in a row and four of the last five in this series, but it should be noted that four those games took place at Comerica Park. The Yankees have won five of the last six regular season meetings between the two franchises in New York.
MLB Predictions Betting Trend: The Over is 9-1 in the Yankees last 10 games as a home underdog with a game total between 8.5 and 9 runs.
