Boston got their 11th consecutive win yesterday as veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield befuddled Cleveland batters for seven innings, giving up just one hit and no earned runs. It was a good thing for the Red Sox that Wakefield was so sharp because they managed just five hits and no runs over eight innings against the Indians Cliff Lee. Jason Bay rescued the club with a three run homer off of Kerry Wood in the top of the ninth.
The win, coupled with a Toronto loss at Kansas City, moved the Red Sox into first place in the AL East with a 13-6 record. The Indians are in the AL Central cellar with a 7-13 mark; they are 4-6 in their last 10 games.
Cleveland will send 27 year old Anthony Reyes to the mound tonight. Reyes is 1-0 this year in three starts and the Indians are 2-1 in those outings. The Downey, California native has pitched 17 innings this season and given up 12 hits and nine earned runs. The right handed hurler has walked 10 and struck out just eight.
Boston will counter Reyes with nine year veteran Brad Penny. Penny, also a right-handed thrower, is 2-0 this year despite sporting a 7.80 ERA. The Oklahoma native has given up 17 hits and 13 earned runs in 15 innings of work. The Red Sox, however, have gone 3-0 in his starts as a result of their averaging 7.3 runs per game.
