Bartolo Colon, yes, that Bartolo Colon, turned in a pitching gem, allowing just seven hits and one earned run over eight innings to get the win. Second baseman Robinson Cano backed Colon's superior effort with a three run homer in the first inning off of the Sox Mark Buehrle. The long ball was Cano's sixth of the season, leaving him one shy of team leader Curtis Granderson.
New York, now 13-8 on the year with a two game lead over the Rays in the AL East, will attempt to earn a series split tonight with veteran lefty C.C. Sabathia on the hill. Sabathia is coming off his longest outing of the season, an eight inning effort in which he allowed six hits and three earned runs to Baltimore in a 15-3 New York victory.
Sabathia is 1-1 in five starts thus far with a 2.73 ERA; he has 10 walks and 30 strikeouts in 33 innings of work.
Chicago skipper Ozzie Guillen will counter Sabathia with 27 year old right hander Edwin Jackson. Jackson started the year in stellar fashion, giving up 16 hits and six earned runs in his first three outings (18.2 innings), but he has struggled in his last two starts. The eight year vet, who is 2-5 with a 4.83 ERA in 15 career appearances against the Yankees, has allowed a staggering 23 hits and 11 earned runs in his last 12.2 innings pitched.
New York had won eight of its last 10 against the White Sox prior to Monday's series opener. The Yankees went 5-1 at home in that stretch, winning by an average of 5.8 runs per game.
