The streaking Rays will look for their seventh straight win tonight when they battle the Rangers in game two of a three game set in Arlington. This evening’s potential series decider is scheduled to get underway at 8:05pm ET at the Rangers Ballpark. The latest MLB Point Spreads have Texas listed as a -155 moneyline home favorite; the Under 9.5 runs is favored at -115 odds.
Tampa Bay, a +123 moneyline dog in last night’s series opener with the Rangers, defeated Texas 8-4 to garner its sixth straight win. The victory improved the Rays record to 13-7 on the season and gave them a one game lead over the second place Orioles in the American League East standings.
Several Tampa Bay players had big nights at the plate with the team cranking out 16 hits, but third baseman Evan Longoria did the most damage, scoring two runs and driving in four in the win. Longoria was one of six Rays to have a multi-hit game, the others being Desmond Jennings, Jeff Keppinger, B.J. Upton, Chris Gimenez, and Elliot Johnson.
Texas, which fell to 15-5 with last night’s loss, pounded James Shields for 11 hits and four earned runs over six innings, but it also left 10 runners on base in the 3:18 game. Josh Hamilton and David Murphy both went yard off Shields; the pair were responsible for driving in all four of the Rangers runs.
Texas will look to even the series tonight with a seven year veteran Colby Lewis on the hill. Lewis is 2-0 this season with a 2.03 ERA in four starts; he has 24 strikeouts to just one walk in 26 2/3 innings pitched. The California native is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one start against the Rays over the last three years.
Tampa Bay will counter Lewis with massive right-hander Jeff Niemann. Niemann, who has yet to go past six innings in any of his starts this season, comes into tonight’s contest with a 1-2 record and 4.11 ERA. The 6′ 9″ hurler does possess a solid 0.98 WHIP as he has given up just 10 hits and five walks in 15 1/3 innings of work. Niemann is 0-2 with a 10.66 ERA in three career appearances opposite the Rangers.
MLB Odds Betting Trend: The Rangers are 2-8 in their last 10 games as a home favorite with Colby Lewis on the hill and a game total between 9.5 and 10 runs.
