Detroit and New York will square off in a game three rubber match today as each team battles to stay near the top in their respective divisions. First pitch in this afternoon’s series finale is scheduled for 1:05pm ET at Yankee Stadium; the game will be broadcast live on TBS. MLB Point Spreads have the Yankees listed as a heavy -177 moneyline favorite and the Under 9.5 favored at -125 odds.
Detroit finally put an end to its five game losing skid last night, beating the Yankees 7-5 to even the series at a game apiece. The Tigers, who are now 5-3 on the road and 11-10 overall, were not spectacular at the plate in the win, but they certainly were efficient, posting seven runs on seven hits. Miguel Cabrera did have a standout performance, going 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI.
Drew Smyly turned in another solid outing, limiting the Yankees to two hits and one earned run over six innings to drop New York’s record to 11-10 on the season. The Yanks Freddy Garcia got bombed for five hits and six earned runs in the first 1 2/3 innings of play.
Yankees Skipper Joe Girardi will look to bounce back from Garcia’s dismal showing by sending staff ace C.C. Sabathia to the mound. Sabathia brings in a lackluster 5.27 ERA, but the big lefty has performed better in his last two starts. Sabathia has yielded 11 hits and seven earned runs while striking out 15 in his last 15 1/3 innings of work. The 11 year veteran is 15-12 with a 4.54 ERA in 32 career starts opposite the Tigers.
Detroit will attempt to stay on the winning track with hard throwing right-hander Max Scherzer toeing the rubber. The Tigers are 2-2 in Scherzer’s four appearances this season, despite the four year veteran’s 8.24 ERA. Scherzer has yet to give up fewer than three earned runs in a start and his last outing proved more of the same as the Mariner rung up 10 hits and five earned runs in his five innings on the hill.
Perhaps Scherzer can get things turned around today. His career numbers against the Yankees are impressive; he owns a 3-0 record and a 2.84 ERA in three starts opposite New York.
MLB Point Spreads Betting Trend: The Over is 8-2 in the Tigers last 10 games as a road dog with a total between 9.5 and 10 runs.
