The Rangers, fresh off their first series loss of the season, begin a three game set with the Blue Jays tonight in Toronto. This evening’s series opener between the two squads is scheduled to get underway at 7:00pm ET at the Rogers Centre; it will be broadcast live on ESPN. MLB Point Spreads have the visiting Rangers listed as a -140 moneyline favorite and the Over/Under set at nine runs.
Texas (16-6) finally met its match over the weekend as a streaking Rays team came into the Lone Star State and took two out of three from the Rangers. Tampa Bay completed the series win last night, beating the Rangers 5-2 on the strength of a solid outing from David Price and 2 2/3 scoreless innings from the bullpen.
Price yielding six hits over six innings, but limited the damage to two earned runs thanks to one free pass and six strikeouts. Texas’ Derek Holland was not as fortunate, giving up nine hits and five earned runs in his seven innings on the mound.
Japanese sensation Yu Darvish will look to get the Rangers back on track tonight as he takes the hill for his fifth major league start. Darvish got off to a shaky start, allowing 17 hits, eight walks, and six earned runs in his first 11 2/3 innings as a Ranger, but he has been outstanding in his last two appearances. The 25 year old right-hander handcuffed both the Tigers and Yankees as the two clubs combined for nine hits and one earned in 14.2 innings opposite the Habikino native. Darvish, who struck out 10 batters in his last start, has been backed by an average of 7.3 runs per game in his first four outings.
Toronto comes into tonight’s game with a 12-10 record after taking two out of three from the Mariners over the weekend. The Blue Jays, who are two games back of the first place Orioles in the AL East standings, scored 14 runs while allowing just two in the final two games of their home set with Seattle.
Kyle Drabek gets the call tonight for Toronto as it attempts to keep pace in baseball’s most tightly contested division. Drabek suffered his first loss of the season in his last start with the Jays falling 0-3 at Baltimore. He still performed well in the setback, though, giving up just five hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. The second year pro, who is making his second career appearance against the Rangers this evening, is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in four starts this season.
MLB Point Spreads Betting Trend: The Rangers are 2-8 in their last 10 games as a road favorite against an AL East team with a total between 8.5 and 9 runs (Under is 8-1-1 in those same 10 games)
