Seattle continues to surprise with their solid play, garnering another series win yesterday by beating the Oakland Athletics 8-7 in 15 innings at Safeco Field. The victory improved the Mariners to 15-10 on the year.
Things looked grim for Seattle in the 13th when the A's scored three runs in the top of the inning to take a 7-4 lead. However, the M's responded with three of their own in the bottom of the inning to stay alive. The Mariners Jose Lopez ended the marathon event by singling home Franklin Guiterrez in the bottom of the 15th.
Seattle used eight pitchers in the win as starter Chris Jakubauskas went just four innings.
The Rangers drew to an even .500 last night by beating the White Sox 5-1 in Arlington, Texas. The win was Texas' second in a row and it allowed them to depart for Seattle with a 2-1 series win over Chicago.
Matt Harrison, who started the year in horrible fashion, had a good outing for the Rangers, allowing six hits and no runs over five innings of work. The Texas offense took care of the rest as they pounded 10 hits and five earned runs in the first five innings off of the White Sox John Danks.
The Mariners will send their staff ace Felix Hernandez to the hill tonight and they will need him to work deep against the hard hitting Rangers. Hernandez is 4-0 in five starts this year with a 2.38 ERA. He is averaging nearly seven innings per start and he is striking out over a batter per inning.
Hernandez was dreadful against Texas last year, going 0-4 in six starts against them with a 4.04 ERA. The Mariners were just 1-5 in those six games.
The Rangers will answer Hernandez with their ace, 12 year veteran Kevin Millwood. The right hander is off to a wonderful start this season as he is 2-2 in five starts with a 2.13 ERA. Millwood has walked just eight batters over 38 innings and opponents are hitting a meager .210 against him.
The North Carolina native, however, would probably prefer that he never see Safeco Field again. He was 0-3 in three starts there last year with an eye popping 7.71 ERA. The M's compiled a .369 average against him in those meetings. The 34 year old Millwood is 1-6 in Seattle over the last three seasons with a less than stellar 5.29 ERA.
