The Angels current losing streak reached five games as the Red Sox followed up their 17-8 win on Monday with a 5-1 victory
last night. Los Angeles managed just five hits in the loss with three of those coming off the bat of catcher Mike Napoli. Mike Scioscia did get a great pitching performance out of Ervin Santana as the Dominican native gave up seven hits and one earned run in seven innings pitched. However, Kevin Jepsen spoiled Santana's effort by allowing four earned runs in a dreadful eighth inning.
The Red Sox saw their record improve to 13-14 with yesterday's win. Boston, in addition to notching another mark in the win column, also got a positive sign in the performance of Jon Lester. The hard-throwing lefty turned in his third straight solid outing, giving up just five hits and one earned run in eight innings of work.
Starting tonight for the Angels will be off-season acquisition Joel Pineiro. Pineiro pitched well in his first three appearances for Los Angeles, but his last two outings have been disastrous. The 31 year old Puerto Rican has allowed 21 hits and 15 earned runs in his last 9.1 innings pitched.
Boston will counter Pineiro with former Angel stalwart John Lackey. Lackey is 2-1 this season with a 4.50 ERA in five starts. He had one of his better performances this season the last time he took the hill, giving up six hits and two earned runs over seven innings in a 5-4 loss at Baltimore.
