Astros at Cardinals MLB Picks: The St. Louis Cardinals will pull out a stopper for Thursday's game with the Houston Astros. Losers in two straight games to the National League Central's worst team, the Cardinals will look to their best pitcher, former Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter to stop the current skid. Carpenter, a veteran righthander, is currently undefeated on the year at 4-0 to go along with a 2.80 ERA. Countering for the Astro's is righthander Bud Norris, who ast 1-4 owns a 7.52 ERA.
Carpenter struck out eight and walked none in a no-decision against the Pirates in his last start on May 7. Carpenter allowed two earned runs on eight hits and his WHIP stands at a sparkling 1.07. He hasn't gone more than seven innings in any of his seven starts this season. Carpenter has yielded just four runs in 20 innings over his last three starts.
Norris continues to baffle the Astros, if not opponents. He lost his third straight start Friday when he surrendered four earned runs in four innings vs. San Diego. He hasn't won since April 15 at St. Louis, his second start of the season and Houston's first win of the year. He hasn't lasted more than five innings in any of his six starts.
In Wednesday's game, Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse was knocked around in a 9-6 Cardinals loss to the Astros. Five of the nine runs charged to Lohse were unearned. Lohse permitted 10 base hits, including three for extra bases. Lohse issued four walks and struck out just two.
MLB Picks: If Carpenter has a quality start, the Cardinals should win today's game handily. Take the Cards to win SU -300.
