Boston and New York, baseball's most bitter rivals, meet for the fourth time this season as they open a three game set at Yankee Stadium tonight. Both teams come into this evening's 7:05pm ET contest having lost back-to-back games. MLB Odds have the hosting Yankees set as a slight -115 moneyline and the Over/Under listed at 9.5 (Under -115).
New York fell to 20-15 and out of the top spot in the American League East last night, losing to the surprising Royals 11-5. The lopsided loss represented the Yankees sixth setback in their last nine games.
New York's pitching staff, which held KC to four hits in Wednesday's 4-3 extra innings game two loss, yielded 16 hits to the Royals yesterday. Starting pitcher Ivan Nova gave up 10 of those hits in the first three innings of play.
Nova's fellow rotation mate, Bartolo Colon, will attempt to get New York back on track tonight as he toes the rubber for Manager Joe Girardi. Colon, a veteran of 13 years, is coming off his worst outing of the season, a 5-7 loss to the Rangers in Arlington. Colon allowed nine hits and five earned runs in just 4 1/3 innings in the Yankee defeat.
Despite that poor showing, the 37 year old right hander is a respectable 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA on the season.
Boston (17-20, fourth place in AL East), like New York, comes into tonight's dust up reeling as well, having lost five of its last eight, including back-to-back games at Toronto.Starting pitching doomed the Red Sox in their brief set with the Jays as Jon Lester and John Lackey combined to allow 16 hits and 14 earned runs in 12 innings of work at the Rogers Centre.
Clay Buchholz will be charged with keeping the Sox in the game tonight as he makes his eighth start of the season. Buchholz got off to a slow start this year, giving up four earned runs in three of his first five starts, but he has performed much better in his last two outings, allowing just 10 hits and two earned runs in 12.2 innings of work.
Buchholz has not enjoyed a great deal of success against the Yankees, posting a 1-3 record and 6.25 ERA in six career starts opposite the Bronx Bombers.
Boston, which took two out of three from the Yankees at Fenway earlier this season, has won seven of the last 10 in this series.
MLB Predictions Betting Trend: Boston is 6-1 since 2003 playing as a raod dog at New York with a moneyline spread between 100 and 120 and total between 9.5 and 10 (Over 5-2).
