The National League Central leading Cardinals will look to avoid a fourth consecutive loss tonight when they host the division rival Cubs. First pitch in this evening’s series opener between the two heated foes is scheduled for 7:00pm ET at Busch Stadium; the game will be broadcast live on ESPN. The latest MLB point Spreads have St. Louis listed as a -162 moneyline favorite and the Over seven runs favored at -125 odds.
St. Louis its record fall to 20-14 yesterday as it suffered a 7-4 loss to the streaking Braves. The setback completed a road sweep for Atlanta and left the Cardinals 2.5 games ahead of the second place Reds in the NL Central standings.
St. Louis, which had won four straight road games prior to its three game home set with the Braves, will attempt to get back on track with right handed hurler Jake Westbrook on the hill tonight. Westbrook, who hails from Athens, Georgia has been outstanding in six starts this season, putting together a 4-2 record, 1.76 ERA, and 1.07 WHIP. The 11 year veteran turned in his best performance of the year last Tuesday, giving up four hits and zero earned runs while striking out eight (seven innings) in a 6-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
Chicago comes into tonight’s game with a 14-20 record, but the Cubs, who are presently last in the NL Central, are only six games back of the division leading Cardinals. Aside from an undesirable six game losing streak in the middle of April, the Cubs have little to no consistency, but May has featured better returns for the team. Chicago is 6-5 this month and showing signs that it may be able to hang with divisional rivals like Houston, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh.
The Cubs, who are 3-3 in six meetings with St. Louis this season, will take aim at a second consecutive win with Ryan Dempster toeing the rubber at Busch this evening. Dempster has been outstanding in five starts this season, posting a 1.02 ERA, 36 strikeouts (35.1 innings pitched), and 0.85 WHIP; however, the Cubs are 0-5 in those five games (averaging just 1.6 runs per game in support of the veteran righty).
Dempster is 8-8 with a 4.52 ERA in 47 career appearances opposite St. Louis (21 starts).
MLB Point Spreads Betting Trend: The Cubs are 2-8 in their last 10 games as a road dog with a moneyline spread between 140 and 160 (Over 7-3 in those same 10 games).
