MLB Picks: Los Angeles Angels vs Chicago White Sox

by Alexander Banks on Thursday, May 15th, 2008

The Chicago White Sox will play the AL West Division leading Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Thursday night and John Garland (4-3, 4.30 ERA) will pitch. But for the Angels and not his old White Sox team. The veteran right-hander spent parts of seven seasons in Chicago before coming to the Angels in an offseason trade that sent shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the White Sox. The matchup will be his first against his old club. Garland will be looking to get the Angels back on the winning track after the team lost to the Sox Wednesday night. The Angels took the first two games of the four-game series with Chicago. Time of first pitch is 10:05 p.m. ET.

Oddsmakers at Bodoglife.com currently have the White Sox listed as 118-moneyline favorites versus the Angels, while the game's total is sitting at 8½.

Despite earning a no-decision in Friday's loss to the Rays, Garland pitched well. The right-hander worked low in the zone and held the Rays to four hits over eight shutout innings, throwing 119 total pitches. Garland has allowed one run over his last 16 innings after giving up 11 runs over his previous 12 innings.

Countering for the White Sox will be right hander Javier Vazquez (4-3, 3.63 ERA). Vazquez held Seattle to just two hits and one run over the first five innings in his last start, but tired in the sixth. He gave up three runs and four hits before leaving with two out but picked up the win. Vazquez had allowed two runs in 15 2/3 innings entering his last start and is 0-1 with a 2.95 ERA in his career against the Angels.

Carlos Quentin belted a grand slam to lift the White Sox to a 6-1 win over the Angels on Wednesday, as +125 underdogs. The seven runs fell UNDER the posted over/under (8.5).

Quentin finished 2-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs for the White Sox. Jose Contreras allowed one run off four hits in seven innings of work.

Mike Napoli drove in the only run for the Angels, who were -140 favorites in that game. Scot Shields gave up four runs in relief to suffer the loss.
