MLB Odds: Yankees vs Mets MLB Picks – May 21st, 2010: Interleague play begins tonight with a crosstown rivalry match between the Yankees and Mets. The two squads are scheduled to hit the diamond at 7:10pm ET for game one of their three game set at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. The Mets, despite getting a 10-7 victory at Washington last night, have won just three of their last 10 games and they currently occupy the cellar in the National League East with a 20-22 record.
The Yankees will send veteran pitcher Javier Vazquez to the mound this evening in hopes that he can break out of his season long funk. Vazquez, which the team picked up in the off-season after an unbelievable 2009 campaign with the Braves, is 2-4 in six starts this season with a eye-popping 8.01 ERA. The 33 year old made a relief appearance against the Red Sox on the 17th, going just a third of an inning, striking out one and giving up no hits or runs. Prior to that he had his best start of the year in a 2-0 loss at Detroit. Vazquez gave up just five hits and two earned runs over seven innings in the setback to the Tigers.
The Mets will counter Vazquez with Tokyo native Hisanori Takahashi, who will be making his first start of the season. Takahashi is 3-1 in 15 appearances this year with a 3.12 ERA. The left-handed hurler has good stuff as he has struck 33 batters in 26 innings pitched and opponents are hitting just .234 against him.
The Yankees have owned this series of late going 18-10 against the Mets since 2007, including 6-3 in Flushing.
