Reds at Indians MLB Picks – May 21, 2010: The Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians will get together on Friday to begin a three game interleague series at Progresive Field. Though from different leagues, the Reds and Indians are very familiar with each other as they share the same Arizona spring training site. The teams battled in Cactus League play this year with the Indians winning 5-of-6 games.
For Friday's game, the Reds will give the ball to Bronson Arroyo to get things started. The ace righthander currently is 3-2 on the season with a 4.78 ERA. Righthander Jake Westbrook (2-2, 4.27 ERA) gets the call for the Indians.
Arroyo pitched his first complete game of the season in Sunday's 7-2 win over the Cardinals. He allowed two earned runs and seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts while throwing 108 pitches. He eluded danger a few times, including his inducing of inning-ending double plays in the first and second innings.
After struggling to find consistent command in his first five starts after his return from 2008 Tommy John surgery, Westbrook has been solid his last two times out. Over his last 15 innings, he's allowed just two earned runs. On Sunday against the Orioles, he tossed his first complete game since April 8, 2008, and he won for the second straight start. He's getting as much effectiveness out of his changeup as he is his go-to sinkerball. He hopes to keep the run going against the Reds.
The Reds enter into this series having won eight of their past 10 games and for a short period, claimed the top spot in the National League Central. Their pitching and defense has been strong during the recent surge.
The Indians have been struggling offensively all season, and injuries have taken a toll also. These problems give the Reds a distinct advantage in this series. For tonight's game the Reds are the best pick, especially if Arroyo brings his best game.
