Yesterday's win improved the Angels record to 21-24 and left them 4.5 games out of first place in the American League's Western Division.
The Cardinals, which had retaken their spot at the top of the National League Central with Friday's victory, fell back to second place thanks to the Angels live bats. St. Louis is now 25-19 on the year and a half game behind the division leading Reds in the division standings.
Today's pitching matchup features former Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter going against Angles ace Jered Weaver. Weaver is 4-2 in nine starts this season with a 3.40 ERA. He is coming off his worst performance of the year after allowing nine hits and seven earned runs over 4.2 innings in a 7-8 Angels loss at Texas. The 35 year old Carpenter has been his usual self, going 5-1 in nine starts with a 2.80 ERA. The New Hampshire native has been especially tough at Busch Stadium where he is 4-1 in five starts with a 1.75 ERA and .189 batting against.
