MLB Picks: Tampa Bay Rays vs Texas Rangers

by Alexander Banks on Monday, May 26th, 2008

The Tampa Bay Rays send their big gun, LHP Scott Kazmir, (3-1, 1.57 ERA) to the mound Monday hoping to get their three-game series with the Texas Rangers off to a good start at Tropicana Field. The Rangers will try to pick up a win behind the arm of RHP Sidney Ponson (3-0, 2.95 ERA).

Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com currently have the Rays listed as 200-money line favorites versus the Rangers, while the game's total is sitting at 9.

Ponson is coming off a complete-game victory over the Twins, allowing one run on six hits and a walk in a 10-1 victory over the Twins. It was the 29th complete game of his career, but his first since April. He is 8-8 with a 4.14 ERA in 24 career games against the Devil Rays. He is also 6-5 with a 3.96 ERA at Tropicana Field, his most victories in any Major League park except Camden Yards.

Kazmir's 16-inning scoreless streak came to an end on Tuesday in Oakland, but not his ability to pitch effectively. The left-hander hasn't lost a thing since coming off the disabled list. He allowed one run on four hits over seven innings against the A's. Kazmir is 1-0 with a 2.05 ERA in four games against the Rangers. He's allowed the Rangers two runs in 16 innings at Tropicana Field.

The Rangers defeated Cleveland 2-1 as a +195 underdog on Sunday. The three runs scored fell UNDER the posted over/under total (9.5).

Ian Kinsler hit a solo home run for Texas, while Doug Mathis allowed one run in six innings in a no-decision.

The Rays defeated Baltimore 5-4 as a -155 favorite on Sunday. The nine runs scored went OVER the posted over/under total (7.5).

Evan Longoria delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning for Tampa Bay, while Carlos Pena hit a two-run home run in the win.
