Boston stayed a game ahead of the New York Yankees in the American League East by getting by the Twins yesterday. The win, the sixth in their last 10 games, improved their overall record to 27-18 and their road record to 10-12. The Red Sox are 5-4 in their last nine games away from Fenway Park.

Jon Lester gets the starting nod tonight for Boston. Lester has not lived up to his preseason billing this year, but the Red Sox have nonetheless won five of his last seven starts. The 25 year old is 3-4 in nine starts with a 5.91 ERA.

However, the Tacoma, Washington native looked solid in his last outing, getting a 5-1 win versus the Blue Jays. Lester worked 6.1 innings in the win, allowing eight hits and one earned run.

The Twins, who currently 22-24 on the year, snapped a four game win streak with yesterday's series opening loss. They are presently in third place in the American League Central division, sitting four and a half games behind the first place Tigers. Minnesota is an outstanding 17-10 at the Metrodome this season.

Ron Gardenhire will counter Lester with right hander Nick Blackburn. Blackburn is 3-2 in nine starts with a 3.83 ERA. He has given up 59 hits and 24 earned runs in 56.1 innings pitched.

The 27 year old Blackburn won his last start 20-1 against the White Sox in Chicago. He allowed four hits and zero earned runs in seven innings.
