The Mets will look to get a sweep of the Nationals this evening as well as move into first place in the National League East. New York and Washington will square off in the final game of their three game set at Citi Field tonight at 7:10pm ET. Washington, which has lost eight of its last 10 games, fell to 13-23 last night, losing 6-1 to the New York Mets. The Nationals, who are 6-16 in road games, have allowed a league high 273 runs this year. They are in fifth place in the NL East and 12.5 games behind the Phillies.
Washington will send 23 year old Jordan Zimmerman to the mound tonight. Zimmerman is 2-1 in seven starts with a 5.71 ERA. The Wisconsin native had a nice showing in his last outing, allowing just six hits and two earned runs in a 2-4 loss at Baltimore.
The Nationals have lost four of Zimmerman's last five starts.
New York closed to within a half game of the division leading Phillies with last night's win. The victory was the Mets fourth in their five games and it improved them to 25-20 overall. New York, which is a stellar 14-8 in games at Citi Field, will look for their fourth sweep of the season tonight.
Starting this evening for New York is staff ace Johan Santana. Santana has been brillant in his second season with the Mets, garnering a 6-2 record in nine starts with a 1.50 ERA. The nine year veteran has allowed just 49 hits and 10 earned runs in 60 innings of work. He has walked just 14 batters while striking out 75.
New York is 2-0 in Santana's last two starts, but the Venezuelan has allowed more earned runs (6) in his last two outings than he did in his previous seven (4).
