Phillies at Mets MLB Picks – May 27, 2010: The New York Mets might be the last place team in the National League East but are hardly lost and forgotten. New York is only five games in back of the first place Philadelphia Phillies and one game below .500 with a 22-23 record. The Mets will try to complete a sweep of the Phillies when they wrap up their three game set tonight (7:10 pm Eastern). Two veterans will battle from the mound in this game with lefthander Cole Hamels (5-2, 3.92 ERA) getting the call for the Phillies while righthander Mike Pelfrey (6-1, 2.86 ERA) counters for New York.
Hamels is beginning to look like the dominating pitcher he was in 2008. He allowed just three hits, one run and one walk and struck out eight in seven innings Friday in a 5-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Citizens Bank Park. Hamels' ERA has not been under 4.00 this late in the season since 2008. He is 3-0 with a 2.36 ERA in four starts this month, compared to a 2-2 mark and a 5.28 ERA in April. The Phillies had high hopes for Roy Halladay and Hamels atop the Phillies' rotation in 2010. They think they've seen flashes of what they'd hoped for already this month.
Pelfrey dropped his ERA below 3.00 by allowing just one run in six innings against the Yankees on Saturday. Mets manager Jerry Manuel said he will be counting on him and Johan Santana for consistent results with the rotation currently in flux. The Phillies, however, roughed up both of those starters when the teams last met. Pelfrey was tagged for six runs in four innings and came away with his only loss of the season. He is 4-3 against Philadelphia for his career, but his ERA is 5.43.
This game has all the makings of a low scoring affair. If looking for a good pick then play the UNDER. These two pitchers are really getting dialed in and are not giving up many runs – take the UNDER 7 1/2.
