The Baltimore Orioles have made sure of one thing. They would like to keep the New York Yankees firmly entrenched in last place of the American League Eastern Division. The Orioles will go for the sweep of their three-game home series with the Yankees Wednesday night (7:10 p.m. ET). RHP Jeremy Guthrie (2-5, 3.62 ERA) will pitch for the Orioles in this game while the Yankees counter with veteran lefty Andy Pettitte (4-5, 4.27).
Oddsmakers at Bodoglife.com currently have the Yankees listed as 130-moneyline favorites versus the Orioles, while the game's total is sitting at 9.
Coming into last Friday's start against the Mariners, Pettitte had been pitching well against teams the first time through the batting order, and poorly the second time around. Not so against the Mariners, whom he limited to two runs in seven innings at Yankee Stadium. Both runs came in the first two innings, and Pettitte retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced. He'll look for continued success against the Orioles, a team he shut out for seven innings back in April. He is 14-4 lifetime at Camden Yards.
Despite taking the loss in his last start, Guthrie tossed a solid 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander has allowed one run in each of his past two starts, and tossed 114 pitches in Friday's loss to the Rays. Although the hurler did not record a strikeout in a May 18 loss to the Nationals, Guthrie managed to fan five Rays in his most recent outing and will look for some offensive support in this home game. Guthrie is 1-2 at Camden Yards this season, with a 3.12 ERA.
Alex Cintron's walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Orioles to a 10-9 win over the Yankees on Tuesday night.
Baltimore upset New York as +110 home underdogs as the teams played over the 9.5-run total listed by sportsbooks.
Kevin Millar went 3-for-5 with two dingers and three runs batted in for the Orioles, while Matt Albers picked up the victory in relief of starter Brian Burres for Baltimore.
Johnny Damon was 4-for-5 with a three-run jack for New York, as the teams combined for nine homers on the night.
