The St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants are set to begin a three game series as they face off for the first time this season at 10:05pm ET tonight. St. Louis Cardinals vs San Francisco Giants MLB Predictions at SBGglobal.com have the home Giants listed as a -120 money line favorite in this evening's West Coast tussle.
St. Louis, fresh off a road series win in Milwaukee, is in first place in the National League Central division with a 28-19 record. The Cardinals have won seven of their last 10 games to move a game ahead of the Brewers in the standings. Tony LaRussa's squad is 11-10 on the road this season.
Starting tonight for LaRussa is right handed hurler Joel Pineiro. Pineiro is 5-4 in nine 2009 starts and he possesses a 3.52 ERA. The 30 year old Puerto Rican has given up just 11 hits and three earned runs in his last two starts (16 innings pitched). St. Louis, however, is 1-4 in his last five appearances on the mound.
The Giants worked their record to even .500 earlier in the week by sweeping the Atlanta Braves at AT&T Park. Their 23-23 record is good enough for third place in the National League West, but they are still 9.5 games behind the first place Dodgers. San Francisco is an impressive 16-8 at home this season.
Toeing the rubber for the Giants this evening is 24 year old righty Matt Cain. Cain is 5-1 in nine starts with a 2.40 ERA. The Alabama native continued his stellar run in his last outing, giving up just one earned run over nine innings in a 5-1 win at Seattle. The Giants are 4-0 in Cain's last four starts and they are 4-1 when he has taken the ball at AT&T Park this year.
