His outing, along with Joey Votto's (4-for-5, three runs), helped the Reds overcome a disastrous outing from Johnny Cueto, who gave up 10 hits and eight earned runs in five innings of work.
Cincinnati, which is 12-11 on the road this season, is hopeful that rookie pitcher and Missouri native Sam LeCure can perform a little better than Cueto when he takes the mound this evening. He will need to in order to preserve the club's division lead. LeCure made his big league debut last Friday against the Astros; he gave up six hits and two earned runs in six innings to get the win (15-6).
St. Louis fell to 30-23 with last night's setback, but the Cardinals can earn a share of the NL Central lead with a victory tonight. Should they lose, though, second place is not in jeopardy as St. Louis presently has a seven game lead over the third place Cubs.
Taking the hill for the Cardinals in tonight's rubber match is former Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter. Carpenter has been in top form most of this season, going 6-1 in 11 starts with a 2.93 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. St. Louis is 8-1 in his last nine starts and 5-1 in his six starts at Busch Stadium, winning by an average of two runs per game.
