MLB Predictions Preview … The Florida Marlins took the first game of their four-game weekend series with the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday night in a marathon 11 inning affair at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Friday night the division leaders face off in game-two with right hander Chris Volstad (1-0, 0.00 ERA) getting his first official start as a big leaguer against the Dodgers Eric Stults (2-1, 2.22 ERA).
Volstad, the Marlins' first-round pick in 2005, pitched two scoreless innings of relief against the Rockies on Sunday to win his Major League debut. After starter Mark Hendrickson gave up four runs in four innings, Volstad came in for the fifth with the Marlins down, 4-3. But the 21-year-old retired six of the 10 hitters he faced, got of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and left with the Marlins leading. The 6-foot-7 righty was called up from Double-A Carolina on Sunday. In 15 starts with the Mudcats this season, Volstad went 4-4 with a 3.36 ERA.
Eric Stults took a three-run lead into the fifth inning against the Giants, but when he let the first two batters reach base, he was yanked, having allowed seven hits and two walks in four innings. Since his shutout of the White Sox, he's allowed 16 base runners in 9 1/3 innings.
In Thursday’s game, Hanley Ramirez capped the first five-hit game of his career with a solo home run in the 11th inning as the Marlins beat the Dodgers, 5-4 and winning as a +135 money line underdog. With the win, the Marlins improved to 4-4 on the road trip, which started off with three straight losses at Colorado. The Marlins are now 48-44, and they are guaranteed a winning record at the All-Star break. The 9-runs scored slipped OVER the posted 8.5 run total.
