Cole Hamels (6-4, 3.36) tossed his fourth shutout of the season in his last outing, as the 24-year-old scattered three hits and went the distance to lead the Phillies to a 5-0 win over Cincinnati at home. The third-year southpaw keeps showing glimpses of the talent that led him to a 15-5 record last season, but unlike 2007, Hamels has not been very consistent, peppering his good outings with some terrible starts. For example, Hamels was rocked in his last appearance against the Marlins, giving up seven runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings as the Phillies lost 7-3 at home.
Andrew Miller (4-5, 5.65) did not last very long during an 11-3 loss at home to Cincinnati, as he was relieved after allowing four runs on six hits in just 3 1/3 innings. Miller gave up three runs or more for the fourth time in five starts, and three of those starts have resulted in losses for the 23-year-old lefty. The opposition is now hitting a startling .310 off of Miller, which is not good news with the powerful Philadelphia offense rolling into town. However, Miller did well in his first start of the season against the Phillies, giving up three runs on three hits over five innings to earn the no-decision as the Marlins fell 7-5 in Philadelphia.
The Phillies took two of three games during that series in the “City of Brotherly Love”, but there was no love for the pitchers as Philadelphia outscored Florida 22-15 over the three games. Hamels can be a juggernaut sometimes, or he can be awful, so he will be the key to whether Philadelphia can pull out the win. Take the Phillies squeeze out a victory in Florida on Wednesday.
