The Tampa Bay Rays suffered back to back losses after riding a six game win streak, while the NY Mets will be glad to be home after a 2-4 road trip. They managed only three runs as Tampa Bay dropped its last two games in Colorado after winning 12-4 on Tuesday. The Rays only scored once before the ninth inning in a 4-3 loss on Thursday. Tampa Bay is 1-24 when it fails to score more than three runs. Tampa will start pitcher Andy Sonnanstine (5-6, 6.65 ERA) who unfortunately has the highest ERA in all of baseball, but on a good note he’s won six straight in interleague play. On another bad note he’s a troubling 1-6 on the road with a 8.55 ERA, but he’s been an interleague workhorse. He's 7-2 with a 3.88 ERA in 10 career starts against the NL, and 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA this season. The Rays are 14-21 on the road where they average 5.43 runs for and 4.74 runs against. The Mets (33-31) have just two wins in their last eight games and are 6-3 in their last nine at home. The Mets could get some big hits against the Rays pitchers tonight. They rank 28th in the majors in homers with 41, Carlos Beltran and Gary Sheffield lead with eight apiece, but may see that total rise as Sonnanstine has allowed seven homers in his last three starts and 13 in his past seven. The Mets will start pitcher Fernando Nieve (1-0, 2.08) who got his first win as a Met. Acquired off waivers in the offseason from Houston, Nieve made an impressive debut Saturday against the New York Yankees. He gave up four hits and two runs in 6 2-3 innings in a 6-2 win.
