The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team survived a scare in Game 1 of their 2008 College World Series Championship Series with the Fresno State Bulldogs on Monday by scoring four runs in the eighth inning and went on to beat Fresno State 7-6. With a win in Game 2 Tuesday night, Georgia will win the 2008 College World Series and the National Championship. If Fresno State wins Tuesday, the series will continue to the final Game 3 on Wednesday.
Georgia is a -170 money line favorite to win Game-2 of the College World Series Championship Series tonight according to oddsmakers at online sportsbook SBGglobal.com . Fresno State is getting +150 ML odds with a 12 run total.
"That was a good college baseball game there," said Fresno State head coach Mike Batesole. "I think if you told me we'd hold that offense to seven with the arms we had, I'd take it. Give them a lot of credit. I knew with the arms we had, we wouldn't strike out many, but I thought we'd have more strikeouts than one. Give them credit. They did a good job."
Entering the eighth inning, the contest was tied 3-3. Fresno State scored three runs in the top of the frame to go up 6-3. In the bottom of the frame, Georgia answered with four runs to reclaim the lead. Senior Matt Olson started the rally with a single to left, and Fresno StateGordon Beckham. On a 0-1 pitch, he greeted Burke with a two-run home run to left. It was Beckham’s first blast run of the CWS, his 27th of the season and gave him the career record at Georgia with 52.
“The home run jump started us but I have to give credit to the rest of the guys because they followed it up by scoring a few more runs and giving us the lead,” said Beckham. “A lot guys were giving me a hard time asking me when I was going to hit one here, and I told them that I hoped it would come when it mattered most.”
