The rapidly fading Rockies will take aim at just their fourth win since June 5th when they welcome the NL East leading Washington Nationals to Coors Field this evening. Tonight’s contest, the first in a four game set, is scheduled for an 8:40pm ET start time. The latest MLB Point Spreads have the visiting Nationals listed as a heavy -183 moneyline favorite; the Over 10 runs is also drawing favored status at -115 odds. Colorado is a +163 home underdog in this evening’s series opener.
The Nationals, at 41-29, own a 3.5 game lead over the second place Mets in the National League East standings, but they have not played their best ball of late. Washington has dropped two of its last three series and it is coming off a series loss to geographic rival Baltimore after yesterday’s 2-1 setback in the finale.
The Nationals figure to get tonight’s series off to a good start with flame throwing right hander Stephen Strasburg taking the ball. Strasburg won his sixth consecutive start his last time out, holding the Rays to five hits and two earned runs over seven innings in a 3-2 Washington victory. Strasburg struck out 10 Tampa Bay batters in the win to give him his third double digit strikeout game of the season.
Strasburg, who is making his 15th start this evening (Washington is 12-2 in his 14 outings), is 9-1 with a 2.46 ERA on the year. He has 110 strikeouts to 22 walks in 84 innings pitched.
Colorado enters tonight’s opener with a 27-44 record following a 4-2 loss at Texas. The Rockies went just 3-12 in June inter-league action and they were 3-15 overall versus the American League including their late May set with the Mariners.
Colorado will seek its 16th home win of the season with former staff ace Jeff Francis toeing the rubber. Francis, who is making just his fourth start of the season, comes in with an ugly 8.56 ERA and 2.05 WHIP. However, he looked more like his former self in his last appearance, giving up six hits and one earned run over five innings in a 4-1 win over the Phillies.
MLB Point Spreads Betting Trend: The Rockies are 4-1 in their last five games as a home dog with a moneyline spread between 160 and 180.
