Even with Monday's loss to the Los Angeles Angels, the Washington Nationals have been winning at a pretty good pace, seven of their previous 10 games, an amazing accomplishment considering the sudden managerial change. Veteran player and now manager Davey Johnson was in the dugout on Monday beginning his reign as Nationals manager but the team ran into a pretty good Angels club, losing the first of a three game inter-league set. The series continues between the Nats and Halos at Angels Stadium with a 10:05 pm ET start time.
The Angels will look to right-hander Joel Pineiro to toe the rubber hoping he can get another win over the red-hot Nationals. Pineiro is 3-3 on the year with a 4.09 ERA. Countering for Washington will be right-hander Jason Marquis. The Nats starter is 7-2 on the year with a 3.53 ERA.
With Pineiro and Marquis listed as starters, oddsmakers list the Angels as -126 MLB Odds favorites in this one with a 7 1/2 total. Nats backers will be getting +116 odds as underdogs. Run-line bettors will be paying -190 on Washington at +1 1/2 while Angel’s run-line bettors will be getting +160 at – 1 1/2.
Marquis took a no-hitter into the sixth inning his last time out, and although rookie pitcher Michael Pineda ended the bid, Marquis continued to dominate. He pitched eight scoreless frames, allowed three hits and struck out four against the Mariners.
Pineiro continued a run of decent outings in Florida, but the bullpen was unable to protect his win. He is consistently getting into the seventh inning with his sinker and slider working effectively enough to keep the ball on the ground.
The Angels will take the field with All-Star outfielder Torii Hunter back in the lineup after missing four games because of a rib injury while banging the wall at Miami.
