Cubs vs Giants – Free Baseball Prediction

by Thomas Jensen on Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

The Chicago Cubs are dragging their heels into the All-Star Break, as they were dominated by their city rivals, the White Sox this past weekend. The Cubs will attempt to get their swagger back when they head to AT&T Park on Tuesday to meet the San Francisco Giants in the second game of a four-game National League series. BetOnline.com has the San Francisco Giants -120 odds baseball prediction favorites over the Chicago Cubs +100 with the total set at 8 runs.

Jason Marquis (6-4, 4.96) had a five-game winning streak come to a screeching halt in an 11-4 loss at home to Baltimore, as he was rocked for seven runs on seven hits in just four innings of work, along with three strikeouts and three walks. This was probably the worst outing of the season for the 29-year-old righthander, who has now given up 12 runs in his last 11 innings of work. Marquis pitched very well in his last meeting with the Giants in 2007, allowing a run on three hits over seven innings, but he had a season-high five walks and took the no-decision as the Cubs won 5-1 in San Francisco.

Matt Cain (4-6, 4.44) has all the tools to be a successful pitcher in the major leagues, as his 13-win season in 2006 suggests, but the 23-year-old who is already in his fourth season has been maddeningly inconsistent this season. Cain gave up four runs on eight hits over five innings, walking two along with four strikeouts. Cain has struggled with his control this season, as he is seventh in the National League in strikeouts, but tenth in walks as well. The young right-hander split a pair of meetings with the Cubs last season, but put up an alarming ERA of 5.73.

The Cubs took two of three from the Giants in San Francisco last season, and they could have a very good chance due to San Francisco's poor home record, which was 14-24 as of Monday, which was the worst in baseball. Chicago has not been that great on the road, but Marquis is a solid 3-1 in seven starts away from home. Take the Chicago Cubs to down the San Francisco Giants as Marquis bounces back.
