San Francisco continued their solid play last night, getting a 6-3 win against Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter. The Giants roughed up the former Cy Young winner for 11 hits and six earned runs in just five innings. Randy Johnson followed up a near perfect outing by Tim Lincecum with a serviceable five inning, three earned run effort.

The victory improved San Francisco to 42-34 overall and left them six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings. The Giants, who are 18-22 on the road, are 7-3 in their last 10 games and in first place in the NL Wild Card race.

Taking the mound for San Francisco this evening is Alabama native Matt Cain. Cain has been amazing this year, producing a 9-2 record in 15 starts with a 2.57 ERA. In seven road outings, the 24 year old right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.72 ERA.

Cain held the Cardinals in check earlier this season, getting the win in a 4-2 victory against St. Louis in San Francisco. He gave up just one earned run over six innings, which is a significant contrast to his only career appearance at Busch Stadium. In April of last year, the four year veteran gave up eight hits and nine earned runs (3.2 innings) in an 11-1 loss against the Cards.

St. Louis fell to 41-38 last night after losing their third straight game and seventh in their last 10. The game two loss brought the Red Birds home record to 22-20 and it left them two games behind the first place Brewers in the National League Central division.

Georgia native Adam Wainwright will take the ball for St. Louis tonight. The 27 year old righty is 8-5 in 16 starts this season with a 3.51 ERA. Wainwright is 3-4 in nine starts at Busch this year with a stellar 2.55 ERA.

Wainwright has pitched against the Giants just one time as a starter, that outing coming in May of this year. The 6'7" hurler gave up 10 hits and four earned runs over seven innings in a 5-3 loss at AT&T Park.

Tonight's game is scheduled to get underway at 8:15pm ET at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN's Wednesday night baseball.

MLB Trend: The Giants are 9-1 in Matt Cain's last 10 starts.
