Kansas City has won 10 of its last 13 games but remains eight back of Detroit and 7.5 back of Chicago with a 39-46 tally. The Royals had the day off yesterday but completed a sweep of the Mariners in Seattle on Wednesday with a 7-3 victory. Prior to their three game set in Seattle, the Royals took two out of three from the Angels in Anaheim and two out of three from the White Sox in Kansas City.
Getting the start tonight for Kansas City is left hander Bruce Chen. Chen has produced a 5-2 record and 3.51 ERA in 17 appearances (seven starts) this season. The Panama native has been particularly effective in his last three starts, giving up just seven hits and five earned runs in 18.1 innings pitched.
Countering Chen is fellow lefty Mark Buehrle. Buehrle, who is 7-7 with a 4.53 ERA this year, has long been the Royals nemesis, compiling a 29-14 career record against Kansas City. However, the Missouri native got knocked around at Kauffman Stadium on June 28th as he gave up 10 hits and three earned runs over six innings in a 3-1 loss to KC.
