The Yankees (49-42) snapped a rough patch in which they lost five of six games by winning four straight. New York has hung around striking distance of a playoff spot despite numerous injuries and a poor rotation. BetOnline.com has the Toronto Blue Jays –114 odds baseball prediction favorites over the New York Yankees +104 odds with the total set at 7.5 runs.
The pitching has been decidedly better during the win streak, as the team surrendered just six runs over the last four games. It's hard to believe that pace can be maintained, especially considered New York's staff, so the team has to hope some players will get healthy and the bats will come alive. The Yankees are very middle-of-the-road in scoring this season.
Joba Chamberlain (2-2) will start for New York. He's been solid if unspectacular since leaving the bullpen for a starting job, winning five of his six starts. He's never given up more than three runs in any of those games, but he also hasn't reached the seventh inning yet. Chamberlain won his lone start against Toronto this season, giving up two runs (one earned) in 4.2 innings of work.
Toronto (44-47) is reeling. Once considered a contender to be the second-best team in the AL East, the team is now the fourth ranked squad in the competitive division―at best. Right now, the Jays reside in the cellar, and it doesn't look as though things will get any better, especially since young pitchers Dustin McGowan and Shawn Marcum are nursing injuries.
Brilliant pitching efforts have been wasted by an ineffective offense in Toronto. The Blues Jays are second-last in runs scored in the AL this season, surely aggravating a talented group of pitchers that rank fourth in ERA. Roy Halladay has still managed to pile up some wins (10-6) and is vying for his second Cy Young award. With a 2.88 ERA and six complete games this season—twice as many as the next leader—he's a good bet to bring home the hardware. The big righty won his last two starts, giving up just two runs over 16 innings.
Halladay is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA against the Bronx Bombers this season. Traditionally, he pitches well against New York, and is 11-5 with a 3.03 ERA in 26 career starts. Halladay can certainly be counted on to deliver for Toronto, but his teammates can't. He'll likely go deep while surrendering just a handful of hits, but the Yankees will grind out a victory.
