One of baseball’s most heated rivalries renews tonight as the Cardinals welcome the Cubs to Busch Stadium in St. Louis. This evening’s game one meeting between the two National League Central foes is scheduled to get underway at 8:15pm ET. The latest MLB Point Spreads have the hosting Cardinals listed as a -143 moneyline favorite; the Under 8 runs is also drawing favored status, presently registering at -120 odds.
The Cubs are are 13.5 games out of first place, but they have played like a division leader for the better part of three weeks, posting a 12-4 record since June 29th. Chicago has been particularly hot coming out of the All-Star break, winning five of its first six second half games.
The Cubs, who improved to 38-53 with a 4-2 rubber match win over the Marlins at Wrigley Field last night, will look to continue their solid play this evening as they take to the road for the first time since the Mid-Summer Classic.
Chicago will send 14 year veteran Ryan Dempster, the center of a number of trade rumors, to the bump at Busch Stadium tonight. Dempster has been nearly untouchable in his last five starts, compiling a 5-0 record while not allowing a single earned run. For the season Dempster is 5-3 with a 1.86 ERA in 14 starts.
St. Louis, while still in the division hunt at 47-45, has not done itself any favors since the break, going 1-5 in second half play. The Cardinals were swept by the Reds at Cincinnati in their first post All-Star Game series and they dropped a series at Milwaukee on Wednesday night, falling 4-3 in a game three rubber match.
Kyle Lohse, who has been the Cardinals most consistent mound presence this season, gets the call tonight as St. Louis looks to get back on track and stay within striking distance of the division leading Reds. Lohse earned his eighth consecutive quality start on Saturday as he held Cincinnati to two earned runs over six innings, but St. Louis lost the game 2-3. Lohse, who is 2-4 with a 5.59 ERA in 14 career starts against the Cubs, comes into this evening’s game with a 9-2 record and 2.80 ERA.
